Welcome Maya: Our New Computer Engineer in the PiV Project
We're excited to present Maya, who joined our team as a computer engineer in May. Having Maya on our team brings fresh perspectives and expertise to our ongoing projects at PiV.

Hi! My name is Maya Silva. I am 25 years old and a Master's graduate in Biomedical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering in Porto (FEUP) and Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS), Porto - Portugal.
In 2024, I began working as a computer engineer at Haukeland University Hospital's Department of Pathology, where I focus on creating machine learning approaches for assessing abnormal changes in kidney biopsies from patients with chronic kidney disease. My work just now involves creating algorithms that can analyze whole slide images (WSI) of kidney biopsies, segment different structures, and analyze biomarkers.
With the help of machine learning we aim to reduce diagnosis time and variability in pathologists' assessments. Our team's overarching goal is to create a complete pipeline, that helps pathologists in evaluating kidney biopsies and provides comprehensive diagnostic and prognostic information to clinicians and patients.
In my role, I work closely with pathologists, other computer scientists and data engineers, and students to classify data, train models, and refine algorithms.

I am passionate about the potential of artificial intelligence in transforming pathology diagnostics and thrilled to be part of this innovative field. Our weekly meetings, where we discuss progress, challenges, and new ideas, have been instrumental in shaping the direction of my project and ensuring its success and I look forward to the advancements we will achieve together.
